Tanzania Peaberry

This single origin coffee comes from Ilomas AMCOS, one of 19 Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) in Tanzania. Established in 2011, this group of farmers work together to increase resources and support for coffee growing and processing, like a coop.
The Tanzania Coffee Board reports that the introduction of coffee to the Moshi region, located in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro, dates to 1898. The area since has become known for its quality coffee production. Small coffee gardens, owned by individuals and less than 3 acres in size, are more common than large estates. Historically, smallholder farmers delivered unprocessed coffee cherry to private collectors who then sold it to exporters for processing in wet mills, often located nearby.
In January 2018, the Tanzanian government introduced new coffee regulations that restricted private buyers and exporters from purchasing cherry and parchment. Instead, only cooperatives were authorized to do so. The regulations were put in place to promote a fairer distribution of profits and to improve the livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers. However, this change caused upheaval in the Tanzanian coffee industry, with many private buyers and exporters struggling to adapt to the new requirements.
