Have you heard of hybrid coffee? It is a new breed of coffee resulting from the cross between two genetically distinct parents. No, it is not genetically modified coffee. Advanced genetic testing is used to determine which two parents should be crossed, and pollen from each flower is painted onto the other. Crossing two varieties of coffee that wouldn’t necessarily cross naturally is helping scientists create new varieties that can withstand climate change. Testing and research are well under way, and the newly developed coffees have shown outstanding results. As compared to other food industries, the coffee industry lags dangerously behind in plant evolution. We believe hybrid coffees are the way forward.
