About Rebuild Women’s Hope Cooperative (RWH)
Marcelline Budza was the founder of RWH in 2013. With a vision to create a space to “place women at the center of the integral development of her community”, she founded this coop along the shores of Idjwi, a remote island in the middle of Lake Kivu, in eastern Congo. She believes that “building the hope of women is building the hope of the entire nation.”
RWH invests in the lives of their members in order to ensure success. They provide easy access micro-credit programs that are normally hard to access, and offer pre-harvest, interest-free loans which producers can repay during their harvests with cash or cherries. They also have plans to build a health care clinic for their members, as many of them lack accessibility to basic health services. RWH also has installed incentive programs for reaching their cherry-delivery thresholds by offering a cow or goat if they do so successfully.
Not only do they provide these programs, they also have built infrastructure to support their farmers. There are two washing stations that sit along the shores of Lake Kivu and all of the space to complete the full harvest of their coffees, including sorting, weighing, de-pulping, washing, pre-drying, and drying, all steps in the harvest process that need to take place. This results in successful harvest for their members and ultimately success to the cooperative.
Below are some basic recipes outlining what we found produced the best cup with this coffee, however we encourage each home brewer to experiment and modify these recipes to suite their own tastes.
