Single Origin Highlight
This strain of coffee grows in low yielding but dense beans that are packed with flavor. La Esperanza borders El Boqueron National Park, a majestic natural forest that is home to a multitude of wildlife, and a main feature of San Salvador’s volcano crater.
After the roya crisis in the region, most farmers let the original Bourbon cultivars die off, replanting with varieties that were more rust and disease resistant. However, La Esperanza has kept most of its original tree populations, which farm managers have kept productive and healthy. Some of these trees are 80-100 years old.
Beginning around 2005, a specialty coffee renaissance lead by the El Salvador Coffee Council (Consejo de Cafe), and the Cup of Excellence program led El Salvador back into the spotlight. Strategic marketing programs aimed at roasters interested in building direct relationships with producers brought buyers to visit the country. There, roasters met with innovative farmers eager to learn what their end consumers appreciated most in a cup of coffee. Quality improved dramatically because of these roaster-farmer relationships, making El Salvador one of today’s most highly prized coffee producing countries in the world.
