Villa Sarchi – Las Lajas
Villsa Sarchi is part of a Bourbon population with a natural single-gene mutation that causes the plant to grow smaller (called “dwarfism’).
The variety was discovered in the town of Sarchi, in the 1950s or 1960. Some farmers consider Villa Sarchi as “the pure Costa Rican variety.”
It is known for being well-adpated to the highest altitude conditions and tolerant of strong winds. It is not resistant to the devastating plant disease called La Roya, however.
We chose Villa Sarchi as our first hybrid coffee release to provide an example of what a pure Arabica coffee variety can taste like.
It’s also a parent of several hybrid coffees we are showcasing.
